Monday evening I checked my email to find a copious amount of messages from Plenty of Fish, which is a dating website in case you didn’t know (I didn’t). I was perplexed because I had not registered for an account on the site (trust me). But someone named Starriri sure did. And she used my email address to register her account. Which meant I got a play by play of her online dating life.
Within only a few hours Starriri attracted a lot of men. Men who were sketchy at best, like viper62245 and MississippiPapa016. Some men even wanted to meet her, like LivingDeadguy777, and most disturbingly 9inwhtD4u.
I sifted through this heap of emails to find the ones that I actually needed, thinking “No thank you sirs, no thank you. You’ve got the wrong girl.” I groaned in frustration and then I laughed at how ridiculous the situation was. What even kind of name is Starriri?
I set out on a mission to delete the account. I changed passwords and answered a lot of questions, doing my best to navigate around pervy messages from Starriri’s suitors, only to end up on a page that said, “YOU MUST HAVE AN ACCOUNT FOR AT LEAST 24 HOURS BEFORE YOU CAN DELETE IT.”
Well okay. I guess POF (we’re on a nickname basis now since they sent me so many emails) wants a fair chance. I get it. So I endured another day of this. And while I was groaning in frustration and laughing at how absurd this is, I began to feel something else: sadness.
Behind all those weird usernames are actual human beings with actual names like John, Nathan, Michael, or Matt. And behind Starriri is a woman. Maybe her name is Sarah, Denise, or Barbara. And she is longing.
God is all that satisfies. It is He who meets our every need. It is He who is our source of life, our source of worth. Starriri and her suitors are longing for God. And because they don’t realize its Him that they’re longing for, they attempt to quench their thirsty hearts with garbage water rather than the Living Water.
How often do you do the same?
How often do I do the same? More often than I’d like to admit.
Whether its affirmation from others, comfort food, or numbing our minds with Netflix, it seems so much easier for us to turn to anything but God as we seek what only God can give us. Jeremiah 2:13 says:
“For my people have done two evil things:
They have abandoned me—
the fountain of living water.
And they have dug for themselves cracked cisterns
that can hold no water at all!”
Starriri, you were made for more.
We were all made for more. Created in the image of the Father, created with a purpose. He delights in us, and rejoices in our dependence on Him. He loves to satisfy our every longing.
Let’s turn to Him first.
PEACE & BLESSINS.
